Your Council

Inverell Shire is located in the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, and the urban centre of Inverell, with a population of 12,000, has a vibrant CBD and progressive large employers. In 1979, three councils amalgamated to form what is now Inverell Shire. A Local Government boundary adjustment in 2019 saw an additional 900 residents from the Tingha, Howell, Stanborough and Georges Creek areas join Inverell Shire. The shire’s population now stands at 16,844.

The Shire has a growing renewables sector in its east and productive agricultural land, which supports grain, sheep and beef production. The shire’s dams, Copeton Dam and Pindari Dam, provide water security for residential, commercial and agricultural growth and are popular recreational outlets.

Council employs more than 200 staff across facilities in Inverell, Tingha, Ashford, Bonshaw, Delungra and Yetman and is one of the shire’s largest employers. Australia’s fourth largest red meat processor, Bindareee Beef is the shire’s largest employer. Council’s vision is to create an inclusive, vibrant community while offering opportunities for residents, commerce and industry.
