Planting Guide for Inverell and District

E-mail Print PDF

The Inverell District is regarded as centering on Inverell but extending to the towns of Ashford, Bingara, Bundarra, Bonshaw, Tingha, Glen Innes and close environments.

Climate and soils vary - therefore careful selection of suitable tree species is of major importance.

1. Climate Consideration:

When planning your selection of tree species, it is important toknow your highest and lowest temperature at the place of planting. Frosts are common in winter especially in the easternparts and early and late frosts can cause severe damage to sensitive species of plants.

The successful growth of frost sensitive species is often determined by site selection with hilltops, hill sides or sheltered aspects giving better results than valley bottoms, low lying areasor frost hollows.

2. Soil Type:

Another important element is soil type. It is heavy black clay, red or black basalt, sandy loam or deep sand? What grows there naturally?

The soil types have an important effect on plant survival and growth.

Soil types such as red basalt, black basalt, granite loams, deep sands and trap soils have different drainage, moisture holding capacities, fertility etc and different soils suit different tree species.

3. Rainfall:

This area recieves moderate rainfall between 650 and 750mm per year with a slight summer maximum.ext
