Youth Council

The Youth Council is a section 355 committee of Council consisting of eighteen (18) youth members nominated by Council in consultation with the Inverell High School, Macintyre High School, Ashford Central School and Holy Trinity School. View the Committees Plan of Management here.
Committee Objectives 
The Committee exists with the following objectives:
  • To develop appropriate strategies to provide drug and alcohol free youth entertainment.
  • To provide a focal point for the co-ordination of youth activities.
  • To provide a political voice and give expression to issues affecting the youth of the Inverell Shire Community.
  • To develop cooperation between youth and other community members in communities in rural and regional NSW and Australia, in order to share experiences and progress the work of the committee.
  • To develop and oversight the implementation of a range of projects and programs designed to address youth service gaps.
  • To promote and positively portray the contribution that young people make to our communities.

The committee meets twenty (20) times during the year and have to date organised several activities that have provided entertainment for the youth of Inverell and surrounding communities. Through the committee's efforts, more than 1000 young people were involved in these activities.


  
Achievements in 2009
This year the Youth Council held an extremely succesful Movie Marathon at the Inverell Majestic Cinemas with 160
12-18 year old's attending the event.
They watched 3 movies including "Confessions of a Shopaholic", "Twilight" and "Transporter 3." The event also had intervals where they were entertained with Nick King doing a few Martial Arts demonstrations, lucky door prizes and they also received wrist bands, glow sticks and FREE BOTTOMLESS POPCORN!!!
 


Achievements in 2008
The biggest event so far this year has been the Dance Party which was held to celebrate Youth Week held on Friday 11 April.
The entertainment was first class with local DJ and live band providing great music for the whole night. The venue of Flanders House and the attendance numbers at the party were also highly praised by all. All of this contributed to make the Dance Party an unequivicable success for the organisers and students.

 


Achievements in 2007

The year ahead has built on the achievements of the 2006 Youth Indent Committee with a number of Committee members automatically moving into their second term of office.

The two major events this year were the Youth Dance Party held at the Inverell Town Hall and the Pool Party. Both events enjoyed good attendance and support, committee members are commended for their organising efforts.

At the Ordinary meeting of Council held in December, Mayor Barry Johnston presented each committee member with a certificate of appreciation, and praised the committee's efforts. "They have embraced the challenges of advocating for the interests of their peers and have done so with considerable tenacity and ability reflecting most favorably on the calibre of young people in our community" said Cr Johnston.

The Youth Indent Committee has demonstrated a tremendous degree of commitment and enthusiasm in promoting the interests of young people. Through their activities, they have fostered a better understanding between young people, their peers and other community members. The committee has further fostered a significant increase in youth entertainment opportunities and advocacy for a range of youth issues, including driver education, as well as portraying a positive image of youth in the community.
