Cash Splash for Fish Event

24 November 2017

An ambitious project to bring visitors and dollars to Inverell has received the formal backing from Inverell Shire Council this week.

This week’s Council vote will see a Cod Cash competitive fishing event held in Inverell in April next year. The nine day event offers a cash bonanza to anglers, with a major prize of $20,000 and an overall prize pool of at least $25,000.

Inverell Shire Council mayor Paul Harmon discussed the Cod Cash initiative with NSW Tourism Minister and Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall this week.

“Council has canvassed the business community and fishing groups to gauge interest in the event and has received a tremendous amount of positive feedback and support, including sponsorship and prizes”.

Mr Marshall acknowledged Copeton Dam is known widely as a tourist Mecca for anglers, who are able to fish for Murray Cod year round.

Cr Harmon indicated the event expects to attract more than 700 participants, with organisers already fielding enquiries from recreational anglers as far afield as Tasmania and Victoria.

Council remains tight lipped on the major sponsor for Cod Cash 2018, however, Cr Harmon indicated an announcement of the event’s naming rights sponsor is expected shortly.

“We are committed to helping local businesses grow, so entry forms will be available in local businesses houses and we will be working with NSW Fisheries to identify opportunities to keep operational costs to a minimum”.

Cr Harmon is upbeat about the expected impacts for the Inverell economy, including retailers, hospitality businesses and tourism venues.

“Inverell Shire boasts some of the best Murray Cod fishing in the state and Council is keen to grow our reputation as a travel destination and also inject dollars in to our local economy”.

“Certainly there are events of a similar nature held elsewhere, however, none on the scale of Cod Cash, which is a nine-day event offering substantially greater prizemoney”.

The event will involve the systematic tagging of an undisclosed number of Murray Cod to be released into Copeton Dam. The tags on the fish will represent a cash prize, with registered participants given the opportunity to catch one or all of these fish and claim the associated prize.

The inaugural event will run for nine consecutive days starting 14 April until 22 April 2018 and coincides with both Queensland and New South Wales school holidays.

Further details will be shared on Council’s websites  and .
